Transforming Lives: Paulette’s Physiotherapy Journey

Written by Mehakpreet Kaur - UPG Physiotherapist

When I first met Paulette Fraser, she had been through more challenges than most of us could imagine. After sustaining multiple injuries, including a back fracture, fractures in her pelvis, and degenerative disc disease, she spent eight months bedridden. On top of this, Paulette was a breast cancer survivor, battling immense physical and emotional pain every day.

Simple tasks we often take for granted like standing, walking, or climbing stairs, were monumental challenges for her. She could only stand for five minutes before intense back pain took over, and the five steps at her home’s entrance felt like an insurmountable hurdle.

Despite everything, Paulette had a fierce determination to reclaim her independence. During our initial consultation, she shared a list of goals:

  • Stand longer without pain

  • Climb stairs without discomfort

  • Get up from low chairs with ease

These goals were more than benchmarks, they symbolised her will to overcome and thrive.

The Transformation

With a carefully tailored physiotherapy plan, Paulette and I embarked on her recovery journey together. Week by week, we worked on building her strength, mobility, and confidence. Today, Paulette is an entirely transformed woman. Here are just a few highlights of what she has achieved:

  • She can now climb her home’s steps without any discomfort.

  • Paulette can stand straight for an incredible 45 minutes without pain, a massive leap from her initial five minutes.

  • She’s able to rise effortlessly from low chairs.

But what’s truly remarkable is how Paulette embraced every challenge I threw her way. Once hesitant about bending forward or engaging in physical activity, she now performs advanced exercises like a pro. From dead bugs and planks to plyometrics and core ball exercises, Paulette takes on every session with determination. She can even hold a plank for one full minute, a feat she once thought impossible.

Paulette’s resilience has made her thrive on challenges. In each session, she pushes her limits and sets new goals. Her progress has not only improved her physical abilities but also reignited her confidence and joy.

Seeing Paulette’s happiness and achievements is why I love what I do. Her story is a powerful reminder of the incredible resilience of the human spirit and the transformative impact of physiotherapy.

Paulette wanted to share her experience with everyone. In her own words:
I just would like to recommend the in-house physio and hydro service because I found it invaluable for my progress and the challenges that it offers me in terms of getting back on my feet. Is been, I don't know what the word is for. It's been absolutely fabulous. So I can't speak highly enough of the service that's been provided. “

To see Paulette tackle exercises like planks and dead bugs is nothing short of inspiring. Here’s a glimpse of her progress in action. Paulette’s journey is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to set new goals and achieve them. With the right guidance, dedication, and belief in oneself, anything is possible.
